Fittings for research and science

Cryo technology has increasingly found its way into wide scientific fields in recent years. In research applications, liquid helium (LHe) is often used as a medium at temperatures just above absolute zero (-271 °C). Examples include the cooling of superconducting magnets, or use in cryostats, where the avoidance of heat input into the medium for precise measurements is often the main focus – which is where valves from STÖHR ARMATUREN come into their own.

Since the 1970s, STÖHR ARMATUREN has specialised in the development of cryogenic valves with vacuum insulation. We have a wealth of experience built up over almost 50 years of dealing with cryogenic and vacuum technology, and our products always meet the highest demands:

  • High leak tightness at seat and to the environment
  • Extremely low heat input
  • High flow performance (synonymous with a high Kv or Cv value)
  • Avoidance of induced heat supply from outside by diverting from the valve spindle by means of sliding thermal contacts or by using new materials for the valve spindle
  • Avoidance of media contamination in the event of a fault (for example due to breakage of the bellow)
  • Integration of monitoring sensors into the valve, in combination with an energy harvester
  • Safety for the plant operators and for the plant itself

 

Requirements

Valve technology that meets rigorous demands
In addition to the suitability for a vacuum insulation, the following is required for different valve functions:

  • High leak tightness at seat with shut-off valves
  • High control accuracy over a setting range with many intermediate control steps for control valves, coupled with the specified control characteristic
  • Filtering the medium for low pressure drop contamination (Δp) for filters
  • Low opening pressure on blow-off valves

Options for adaptation to a wide variety of operating conditions
Our series 1600 valves are specially designed to meet these extreme requirements. Stem extension or diameter of the welding flange are available as well as different control characteristics (equal percentage, linear, custom individual) of the control cone. Special requirements such as resistance to magnetic fields or radioactivity can be fulfilled on demand.
